OLD-TIME GREASY BEANS
Appalachian Seeds.
Dried, shelled beans only. No fresh beans.

Greasy Beans in Spring

This is on a hillside in western North Carolina. The bean seedlings are about 6 inches tall. You can see Comfrey plants too.

Lots of Little Bean Seedlings

Before I plant the seeds, I weed where I will be planting them. I let the rest of the ground grow with native and beneficial plants.

Bean Seedlings and Comfrey

On the right side of this photo is a small comfrey plant. Comfrey is good for the soil. It brings up nutrients from deep in the ground, and when the leaves decompose, they nourish the soil.

Happy Group of Greasy Bean Seedlings

They look healthy. You can see native ferns growing with them.

Trellis of Greasy Beans

These are the same plants as the photos of the 6 inch seedlings. This photo was taken in August.
Reaching for the Sky

These are Greasy Beans growing above the 6 foot trellis.
Productive Plants

These plants produce a lot of beans.
Group of Bean Pods

Pods tend to grow in clumps together.
Three Pods

It is common for bean pods to grow together off of one stem.
End of August

This is two trellis rows with 'weeds' in between the bean plants.
Lot of Beans

A jumble of beans, leaves and stems on a trellis.
Cornucopia

Plenty of beans.
Mid-September

A bucket of Greasy beans with my boots in the photo.
Bucket of Beans

If you are shelling beans, the best time to pick them is when the pods are yellow.
