Our Toggenburg Herd: 4 Does and 1 Buck (page 1)

For our breeding herd we have 4 females and 1 male who are together all the time. During the day they have pasture to graze on and shelter when they need it. The pasture has big oak trees so they enjoy acorns in the fall.

The photo at the left are some of the goats eating at the hay rack with 2 babies. The photo on the right is Buckaroo on the left and Fuzzy on the right.

During the summer and fall we bring them comfrey and other plants as a special treat. They love it. In the winter they have fescue hay available all the time. They don't like snow that much and in the winter will only go a little way into the pasture.

At dusk they wait near the barn because that is when they get their goat sweet feed. We put them in the barn for protection from the weather and predators. We have never had problems with predators but there are coyotes in the area. At night they also have fescue hay to eat. They always have water available.

They have access all the time to mineral salt, goat minerals, sodium bicarbonate (buffered baking soda) and kelp (seaweed for trace minerals). We sometimes add copper sulfate to their feed because sometimes there is not enough in goat sweet feed. We also occasionally supplement with azomite trace mineral powder, food grade diatomaceous earth (diatoms), and brewers yeast.

The does Sweetie and Sapphire were bought together in 2010 and like to sleep together at night. The does Fuzzy and Star have been together since we bought them as young does and are friends. The buck Buckaroo is more independent than the does.

When they graze on the pasture they always stay together. It's usually Fuzzy who decides where the herd will go. The kids always stay close to their mother. It's fun to watch the kids jumping and playing.
