Ameraucana and Araucana Chickens

Ameraucana and Araucana are two different breeds though both are sometimes called Easter Egg chickens. Both have pea combs and lay blue-green eggs. Ameraucana's have full tails and Araucana's have no tails. The American Poultry Association "Standard of Perfection" recognized the Ameraucana in 1984 as a chicken that lays green-blue eggs, has muffs and a beard, but not ear tufts. (Ear muffs are a cluster of feathers projecting from the face below and around the sides of the eyes, and extending from to, and covering, the ear lobes. Ear tufts are clumps of feathers growing from small tabs of skin usually found at or near the ear openings.) Ameraucana and Americana are different breeds.

Good for Eggs and Meat

Green EggsAmeraucanas are primarily raised for eggs though are big enough for meat too. Hens lay 180 medium sized eggs a year. They are not very broody. Ameraucanas are docile, hardy in winter, good foragers, and bear confinement well.

There is an Ameraucana group you can join Ameraucana Breeders Club.
